ACT Women in Economics: Special Guest Presentation by Professor Naila Kabeer

On behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ACT Women in Economics Network and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, we are thrilled to invite you to a special guest presentation by feminist economist and Professor of Professor of Gender and Development at the Department of London School of Economics and Political Science, Naila Kabeer. This is her first to Australia.

In this presentation, Professor Kabeer will present reflections on women's economic empowerment and work with a focus on unpaid care and reproductive work and private sector "magic bullets" - such as microfinance. Professor Kabeer will draw on her recent field research on women's working conditions and experiences in the garment sector in Bangladesh and other parts of South East Asia.

Professor Kabeer is an luminary in the fields of economics, sociology, development and gender studies. She has spent the past five decades offering critical interventions on how poverty and gender inequality intersect with other socio-economic inequalities within the households and labour markets. She has more recently studied women and girls' economic empowerment interventions in formal and informal economies.

This is Professor Kabeer's first visit to Australia and is sponsored by The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and the CGIAR Collaborative Platform for Gender Research, University of Canberra.  Professor Kabeer a keynote speaker at the 'Seeds of Change' conference.

Seating for this event is limited.

Please RSVP to Tess Connolly, by Friday 29 March.

This event will take place at 255 London Circuit Canberra City at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Naila Kabeer is Professor of Gender and Development at the Gender Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science. She is interested in various aspects of inequality and how they play out within households, labour markets and the wider economy. Professor Kabeer has also investigated different forms of collective action by poor and marginalized groups seeking a more just distribution of power, resources and political voice and what this tells us about the relationship between individual empowerment and societal justice. Professor Kabeer has sought to link her research with the real world of policy and practice through regional training and advisory work with governments, international and bilateral organizations, and national NGOs. She is on the board of the Women’s Rights Program of the Open Society Foundations, the International Centre for Research on Women and the ILO’s Better Works Program. She is also on the editorial committee for the Feminist Economics journal.
