Environmental Markets: Paradigms, Potential and Pitfalls
Markets can be highly advantageous in securing improved efficiency in environmental resource allocations.
They have become increasingly popular policy instruments, even amongst environmentalists.
However, ignoring the significance of transaction costs and the influence of rent seekers in their design and implementation can de-rail environmental markets.
Biography
Jeff Bennett is Emeritus Professor and former Director of the Arndt Corden Department of Economics in the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. He has almost 50 years’ experience as a teacher, researcher and consultant in the fields of Environmental Economics, Resource Economics and Agricultural Economics.
First Friday Economics (FFE) is an exciting initiative aimed at enriching the professional and social lives of Canberra economists. We aim to provide a congenial setting, on the first Friday of every month, to allow the interaction of mainly young Canberra economists, with a major Canberra economist invited to give a short address.
Refreshments are provided free of charge.
Please register one week in advance to assist with catering.
Light refreshments will be served, including soft drinks.
