The economics of unmet need in mental health conditions - Speaker: Steve Robson

Date

From: Wednesday August 28, 2024, 6:00 pm

To: Wednesday August 28, 2024, 8:30 pm

After the tragic events at Bondi Junction this year, attention has turned to the care needed for Australians with severe chronic mental health conditions such as schizophrenia.  The Productivity Commission estimates that one in five of us experience a mental health problem each year, and dealing with this has a $70 billion effect on the economy annually.

Despite this, a substantial number of Australians cannot access care for family members.  Steve Robson is leading a group looking at unmet need in severe chronic mental health problems: what it would cost, and what benefits – or otherwise – it would have for our economy.

Join us at the Commonwealth club from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Canapes and drinks included.

Steve Robson is Australia's only surgeon who also holds a degree in health economics.  He is Professor at the ANU Medical School and also a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute of the Crawford School of Public Policy.  He previously has worked in economics with the Deakin Institute for Health Transformation.
Steve is passionate about mental health and currently works in health economics of mental health with the ANU Department of Psychiatry.
Steve currently is President of the Australian Medical Association.  He is a long-standing member of the Economic Society of Australia and of the International Health Economics Association.  He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in 2016.
