2024-25 Budget Seminar

The seminar will be a partner event between the University of Canberra and the Economic Society of Australia, ACT Branch with guest presenters Dr. John Hawkins and Professor Stephen Bartos.
Two leading UC fiscal and monetary policy experts have been commissioned by The Conversation to analyse the Budget. They will be in the Budget lockup all day on Budget day. Their articles will published soon after the Treasurer finishes his budget speech that night. A few days later, at this seminar, John and Stephen will have fully digested the budget and other economists' reactions to it and can deliver considered opinions on its strengths and weaknesses.
The seminar will start promptly at 5.40 pm.
The seminar will be presented by Dr. John Hawkins and Professor Stephen Bartos.
Dr John Hawkins is a senior lecturer in economics at the Canberra School of Politics, Economics & Society at the University of Canberra. He holds a PhD from ANU and an MSc from the London School of Economics. Before his academic career he was a senior economist in the Reserve Bank and Treasury. He also served as secretary of the Senate Economics Committee. He writes extensively in The Conversation.
Professor Stephen Bartos teaches graduate units in economics and government finance, and writes regularly for The Mandarin and The Conversation. He is a former senior Australian Government official, among other things as Deputy Secretary and head of Budget Group in the Department of Finance. More recently, he has served three terms as Parliamentary Budget Officer for NSW, finishing in June 2023 before returning to the University of Canberra.
Regular public transport runs to UC from the city.
