The Productivity Commission is the Australian Government's independent research and advisory body on a range of economic, social and environmental issues affecting the welfare of Australians.

Our role, expressed simply, is to help governments make better policies in the long-term interest of the Australian community.

About the role

The Productivity Commission is seeking applications from highly skilled economists and/or other public policy professionals to undertake, lead and contribute to major public inquiries and commissioned research across a diverse range of key policy challenges facing Australia.

We offer a stimulating and wide-ranging policy research environment and the opportunity to influence the direction of public policy. The work is broad with topic areas that vary from year to year, including analysis of productivity, social issues and the environment, market operation and competition, regulation, economic infrastructure, resources, and trade.

Successful applicants will demonstrate the ability to work well in teams to effectively manage projects, provide strategic direction and leadership, set priorities, and supervise the work of others to produce high quality project outcomes. Excellent conceptual and analytical, communication and engagement skills, with the ability to lead informed debate about the validity of arguments is also essential for this role.

Academic qualifications in economics or other fields relevant to public policy are required. Additional qualifications in areas such as law and science are desirable.

*A merit pool of suitable candidates may be established and used to fill similar vacancies either on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis in our Canberra or Melbourne offices.

What we offer

The Commission offers a competitive salary plus generous superannuation with employer contributions of 15.4%.

We provide on-going learning and development opportunities tailored to individuals’ needs at different points of their careers including access to study assistance opportunities.

We have a collaborative, flexible work environment and we recognise the importance of balancing work commitments with family, caring and other personal commitments outside work.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from candidates with broad experiences and diverse backgrounds. We also offer reasonable adjustments for applicants with disabilities.
